The 2011 Oak Openings Stampede 25K Race and 5K Fun Run/Walk Sunday, September 18, 9:00 a.m.
What: A 25K (15.5 mile) race on the Oak Openings Boy Scout hiking trail and a 5K (3.1 mile) fun run/walk on the Oak Openings Ferns and Lakes Blue trail. This is a Toledo Roadrunners (www.toledoroadrunners.org)sponsored event.
Where: The Lodge at Oak Openings Metropark. The park is located two miles west of the Toledo Express Airport south of Airport Highway in Swanton, OH. The lodge is located at 5230 Wilkins Rd. For info about Oak Openings, click here.
Course and Support: The 25K race begins and ends at the lodge and follows the Oak Openings Boy Scout hiking trail counter-clockwise on single-track dirt trail through hardwoods, evergreens, prairie, oak savannah, and meadows. There will be roots, stumps, weeds, sand, mud, bugs, and all the usual stuff of a trail run, but no stream crossings. The course is mostly flat with a few modest climbs and descents. Miles will be marked. Water, lime Gatorade, and energy gels will be available at miles 1.9, 4.9, 8.1, 10.7, and 13.6. Porta-johns will be located at miles 4.9 and 10.7. Course support ends at 1:00 p.m. Post-race food and beverages will be available in the lodge.
Awards for 25K Race: - Male/female overall and male/female masters (age 40 and up); single age group awards; no duplication of awards - Age groups: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over - All finishers will receive a finisher's medal
5K Fun Run/Walk: The 5K run/walk (no awards) begins and ends at the lodge and follows park trails. A water stop will be located at approximately 1.5 miles.
Proceeds: Proceeds from the event will support SewHope, a Toledo-based, nonprofit organization that provides medical and humanitarian services to the poor in Guatemala (www.sewhope.org).
